Quotes From the Academy Awards

The Associated Press

Heard at the 73rd annual Academy Awards:

"I won and I get to scream and jump a little. But I got to go back to work tomorrow." - "Traffic" co-star Benicio Del Toro backstage with his best supporting actor Oscar.

"You know, I swore that if I ever won an Oscar, that I would say thank you to all the waiters and waitresses who used to cover my shift for me so I could run downtown on the subway and audition. I wish I'd said something to the waiters." - "Pollock" supporting actress Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden after arriving backstage.

"Julia Roberts told me the other day that she admired me. How do you think I'm feeling right now?" - "Gladiator" composer Hans Zimmer, grinning ear-to-ear.

"She says tomorrow's another day and you're going to be looking for another job." - "Almost Famous" actress Kate Hudson on advice she received from her mother, Oscar-winner Goldie Hawn.

"Suddenly, going to work tomorrow doesn't seem like such a good idea." - Steven Soderbergh after winning the best director Academy Award for "Traffic."

"I love the world. I'm so happy. Thank you." - Julia Roberts, who won a best actress Oscar for "Erin Brockovich."

"I want to thank the members of the academy who were bold enough to give me this award for this song which, obviously, is a song that doesn't pussyfoot around or turn a blind eye to human nature. God bless you all with peace, tranquility and good will. Thanks." - Bob Dylan in accepting the Oscar for original song "Things Have Changed" from "Wonder Boys."

"By the way, be sure to stay tuned for the whole show because at the end of the night we are going to vote somebody out of show business." - Host Steve Martin, more than 2 1/2 hours into the show.

"If they say, `I don't like your movie,' it's kind of like saying, `I didn't like your life.' And then they say, `By the way, it was a little too long."' - "Almost Famous" screenplay Oscar winner Cameron Crowe when asked about the possibility of losing for the 1970s rock epic, based partially on his life as a teen journalist.

"Thank you. Well, thank you academy for this special recognition for non-English movies." - Director Ang Lee in accepting the best foreign language film Oscar for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

"`Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' sounds like something Siegfried & Roy do on vacation." - Oscar host Steve Martin.

"I saw the trailer for `Dude, Where's My Car?' and it ruined it for me. Maybe that's not fair because I had read the book." - Steve Martin.

"I learned on my own face, that's why I look like this." - Rick Baker, Oscar-winning makeup artist for "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas," when asked how he learned his craft.

"Where's the Oscar? For God's sake, don't take him anywhere." - Cinematographer Jack Cardiff after receiving an honorary Oscar. Presenter Dustin Hoffman had set the statuette to the side as Cardiff got ready to speak.

"My music is to dream without boundaries. Tonight, with you, I see boundaries being crossed. As a classic musical composer, I am thrilled to be honored here." - Tan Dun after winning the original score Oscar for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

"We live in a great country. If this statue was in Afghanistan it would be destroyed right now." - Steve Martin.

"If anyone said when we were doing the film, you'll be nominated for an Oscar, I would have said no. I would have told them you must be talking about someone else." - "Billy Elliott" actress Julie Waters.

"Crowe was not being rewarded for his performance in Gladiator, but rather his LAC, Insider, and Gladiator put together. Tom Hanks is going to win the oscar next year for Road to Perdition, Sam Mendez is no fluke. If you wanna whine about something winning that didn't deserve it, complain about Gladiator for best picture. Traffic wins oscars for directing, screenplay, and editing, not to mention del toro's for supporting actor and the SAG award for best ensemble. Why vote for Gladiator over Traffic when it wins the other awards? "
